OnePlus finally made a complete flagship phone without compromising on the specs that matter most to its end users.
In April 2020, they launched its newest high-end flagship phone, the OnePlus 8 Pro. The phone is competing against the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra in terms of specs and price.
There are still a few snugs, which we will point out because that is what you do for a phone that is starting at Ksh. 107,000. Read this review to the end to find out if this phone is worth your money.
Things to Consider Before Buying Phone Over Sh. 100,000
Size of the Phone – If you are going to purchase a phone worth over 100, 000 then it should be accompanied with a bigger display.
Though it’s important to a screen with a 6-inch display might overwhelm your hands if you are using it with a single hand.
Wireless charging is an enormous deal with the flagship released in 2020. I think it is nice to have several charging options if you are going to spend Ksh. 100,000 on a phone. Though for some phone brands you will have to purchase the wireless charging system separately.

The One Plus 8 Pro operates on Android 10 with the Oxygen OS 10.0. Thanks to the MEMC chip inside Qualcomm SM8250 and SNAPDRAGON 865 makes the One Plus 8 Pro a faster and power-efficient device.
Display OnePlus 8 Pro
The display is a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1140p. This is one of the most accurate color displays with a Delta-E score of 0.26. OnePlus claims that this is the best display they have ever given.
The shape of the device is boxy, making it one of the best-looking displays released in 2020, plus there is a little ridge that is cut along the top edge of the OnePlus 8 Pro with a punch-out camera that hosts a 16MP front-facing camera.
At the back of the phone, you will notice the OnePlus logo with a huge camera bump that might get in your way anytime you pick the phone up. To solve this minor problem, use a phone in case it will make the back surface smoother.
The fact that they have matched with all the flagship features that are expected to be in phones such as the smooth 120Hz refresh rate plus the 240Hz touch rate, is outstanding. You are going to enjoy scrolling through your phone since the touch of responsiveness is 2 times faster.
One of the best things that I love about this phone is that it allows you to operate it on both high resolution and high refresh rate, although it is at the expense of the battery. When you are using applications that don’t require a high refresh such as Google maps and Snapchat, the phone refreshes steps down from 120Hz to 60 Hz.
The overall design looks edginess with the curviness of the OnePlus 8 pro. bad thing when you hold the device you might accidentally touch the curved screen, rendering the rest of the display unresponsive.
I think it best to tone the curved screen down, and Samsung popularly known for curved display has toned down the curve on the screen display, perfecting the display with the Samsung Galaxy S20 series. OnePlus should follow the same path.
The oxygen operating system makes this one of my favorite clean phones. The back also has a glossy finish, making it resistant to fingerprints.
Is OnePlus 8 Pro Performance Reliable?
One plus is famously known for having the fastest smartphones thanks to the hardware and software. It is available in 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB OR 256 GB of storage.
You won’t have any issues with the speed and performance of the OnePlus 8 Pro. It is a quick and smooth device like one plus claims, thanks to the software and a higher refresh rate screen.
All the OnePlus internal specs are top ends, a Snapdragon 865, 12 GB high fast RAM, and 256GB storage.
The One plus 8 pro runs on the OXYGEN operating system, which is clean. One thing I love about One Plus is the fact that they keep on updating their software. Everything they do is meant to improve your experience when you are using the phone.
Is OnePlus 8 Pro Waterproof?
One thing that I love is OnePlus 8 Pros has IP68 water and dust certification. Making it waterproof and dust resistant. You don’t have to worry if it falls on the water.
The battery size of OnePlus 8 Pro
They have upgraded the battery in the OnePlus 8 Pro to 4150 mAh. giving you a longer battery life when using it over 5G or when operating it at 120 refresh rates. This is not the biggest battery in the world, but it will serve you well, giving you up to 12 hours of battery life.
The OnePlus 8 Pro offers a high-refresh-rate screen and you can step down to 1080 p to save the battery life.
OnePlus phone is famously known for their high charging battery, the OnePlus 8 Pro is no exception to that you get a 4,150 mAh battery capacity that can fast charge with 30 watts adapter that comes with the device. Allowing you to go from zero to half of the battery capacity in under 29 minutes.
What’s new to this phone is wireless charging. OnePlus has placed a coil at the back of the phone, what’s better is that it is fast wireless charging, you can charge up to 30 Watts impressive wireless charging, being able to charge to your phone from zero to half battery in half an hour.
There is a catch, you only get the fasts 30watts wireless charging with this phone with their brand-new one plus wireless charging tech. The wireless charger can also charge other devices, not as fast as it can charge the OnePlus 8 Pro. This is because the device has been made specifically to charge the OnePlus 8 pros.
If you don’t want to buy the wireless charging at an extra cost, you could charge the one plus 8 Pro using other wireless charging system but it will only charge at 5watts which is slow, considering the fact the wireless charger that is designed for this phone charges at 30 watts.
Camera Capabilities of OnePlus 8 Pro
The OnePlus 8 Pro is a high-end quality flagship camera, right in line with the Huawei P40 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S20 and falling short of the iPhone 11 Pro and the Pixel.
The OnePlus 8 Pro has quad cameras at the back of the phone. It has a new 48 MP main camera with a 48 MP ultra-wide camera with a focal of 2.2 which also doubles as a macro lens, an 8 MP telephoto camera with F/2.44, and a 5 MP color filter camera.
The camera takes amazing photos. You will enjoy capturing the moments that matter to you most with this phone, especially when you use light.
The night mode is good, taking clear subject photos at night that appear amazing. The max zoom is 30 X form the telephoto camera which is not very useful because the photos aren’t clear. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is still going to be the chap for zooming in photos up to 50X.
You have a variety of options resolution when taking video. From 1080p@30/60/240fps and 4k@30/60fps. You can also take Auto HDR and Gyro-EIS can give you that cinematic setting with great stabilization.
You also get a slow-motion setting off up to 480 fps, then you will have to knock it down to 720 p to take advantage of the slow-motion video.
The iPhone 11 Pro remains the greatest with producing videos.
The Selfie camera is still struggling with proper exposure, but it is still producing amazing selfie photos.
If the tiny punch of the front camera disturbs, you can always hide it by putting a forehead on your phone. That it is out of the corner takes it out of your way so it doesn’t bug you.
The OnePlus 8 Pro has a camera hole punch in the screen’s front which is a downgrade from the previous OnePlus 7 Pro which has a pop-up camera and nothing on the display. Probably the reason they removed the sliding pop up camera is to save on the cost of manufacturing, or they just wanted to appear like all the other flagships cameras produced in 2020.
Which Color is best in OnePlus 8 Pro?
The OnePlus 8 Pro comes in bright colors of Interstellar Glow, Ultramarine Blue, Glacial Green, Onyx Black, and Polar Silver.
These colors are wonderful, the brightness of this color will cause people to turn their heads when you are with your phone in public.
Extra Features of OnePlus 8 Pro
There is fingerprint recognition underneath the screen. It is reliable and keeps the identities in your phone safe.
- Facial recognition
- Wireless charging
- Reverse charging
- Bluetooth 5.1
- Light sensor
- Proximity sensor

I have nothing negative to say about this phone so far. The screen is gorgeous and responsive. The in-screen fingerprint sensor and facial recognition are quick and accurate. The camera is an enormous step up, even though the 5T camera was good. I love the dual speakers.

What are the Alternatives of One Plus 8 Pro?
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
Samsung is famously known for producing smartphones with the best screen displays. The 6.9 inches Dynamic AMOLED gives you a better experience with the 2X capacitive touchscreen, unlike the 6.78 inches display found in the One Plus 8 Pro.
The performance of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the same since they both share the same chipset Snapdragon 865. Otherwise, the S20 Ultra offers you a better value for money because it has a higher camera count with up to 108 MP and lastly the battery capacity is also big with 5000 mAh.
Have a look at what our editors have to say regarding Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
iPhone 11 Pro
You know that OnePlus 8 Pro is a fantastic phone if one recommendation is the latest iPhone 11 Pro. The screen of the iPhone is 5.8 inches from the super retina XDR display. which gives you a better experience when compared to the OnePlus 8 Pro.
Also, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is faster with the A13 Bionic chipset, unlike the OnePlus 8 pro that has the Snapdragon 865 on board. We all know that nothing can be matched to the camera capabilities of the iPhone 11 Pro.
Otherwise, OnePlus 8 Pro has a bigger battery capacity of 4500 mAh and it has a higher RAM capacity of 12GB or 8GB. You will be the one using the phone, and you will buy it with your hard-earned money. It is best to select the specs that matter most to you.
Here is a review of the iPhone 11 Pro.
Is OnePlus 8 Pro Worth Buying?
In the past years, OnePlus was famously known for producing a great mid-ranged budget phone. I do have to get over that OnePlus 8 Pro isn’t a budget phone. This is because of the high specs that come with the Oneplus 8 Pro. They went full out to produce the best flagship with no compromise at all.
That is the reason One Plus is charging premium money for the OnePlus 8 Pro and they are offering everything expected from a flagship.
This is one of the best phones for me to recommend. Even though it is one of the most expensive one plus phone ever. I still think it is the smartphone you should pick.
