The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the most expensive flagship phone ever. There are a lot of words that Samsung could have used to name this device, they could have gone plus or Mega or Max or Pro. Instead, they named it the Galaxy S20 Ultra, signifying how radical this phone is.
This is the greatest phone Samsung has ever produced, and they have attacked all the numbers from giving you the latest chipset Snapdragon 865, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB UFS 3.0, 108 MP, 100X zoom, 8k, 5000mAh, 120 Hz, 1440 p, and it also supports 5G.
I not only love the fact that Samsung was extreme in the specifications numbers but also they haven’t compromised on anything with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. It makes sense why you will dig deeper into your pockets to get this device.
In this review, we justify if this phone is worth all that money. I discuss in detail the specs I love most about the Galaxy S20 ultra.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Phone Over Ksh. 100,000
It’s not a secret that most of the flagship phones released in 2020 are expensive. All of them ranging over Ksh. 100000. That is a hefty investment you are making when purchasing a new flagship smartphone.
Camera quality – expensive flagship phones have a camera that can take amazing photos in low light and normal conditions. Ensure that the phone has the best camera that will allow you to capture beautiful memories that you can share with your friends and family.
Internal storage – If you are going to buy a phone over Ksh. 100,000 then it’s safe to ensure that it has sufficient storage on board. That way you won’t have a problem with downloading music and applications that make your life easier. Your new phone should have a storage of at-least 64GB will ensure that you don’t run out of space to store your favorite memories.

Chipset & Performance of Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has two different chipsets depending on where you buy it. The China version has the EXYNOS 990, while the global version has the QUALCOMM SM 8250 SNAPDRAGON 865.
The phone runs on the new Android UI. Samsung improved on the S20 Ultra model and made it easy for you to access all the applications on the phone using one hand.
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Display
The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a massive phone that will easily fit in a pocket. I have to note that gigantic phones aren’t meant for everyone. If you have small hands, you will have a hard time handling the S20 Ultra with one hand. If you are upgrading from a device that has a small screen display, it will take you some time before your hands fully adjust to grasping the S20 Ultra.
One thing that you get from a huge phone is a tremendous display. The Galaxy S20 Ultra gives you a 6.9-inch screen with a 1440p resolution. This is probably the best display of Samsung has ever made in the history of smartphones. It gives you the best brightness, color-accurate contrast, and the best viewing angles for any smartphone display.
The 120 Hz refresh rate makes your experience fantastic when you are scrolling on your phone. The display also has a 240 Hz touch sensory rate, which makes it 2X snappy and responsive while interacting with the phone.
One thing Samsung does not allow you to use the 120 Hz refresh rate and a 1440p resolution at the same time because it would drain out the battery life. Because you are paying Ksh. 120,000 for this phone, it should allow you to use it however you want to use your phone.
It’s not just the high-end specs and the big numbers, Samsung has flattened out the edges of the Galaxy S20 ultra display, so it doesn’t spill out when you are using it. Thus increasing your user ability. It has expandable storage at the top, a speaker at the bottom, headphone jack.
The bottom line, you get to experience the Ultra in the most extremist format!
Is the Galaxy S20 Ultra Waterproof?
Yes, the phone has IP68 water and dust resistance certification.
The bigger the battery, the better! Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra gives you 5000 mAh. This is enough battery to last you throughout the entire day without having to recharge your phone, even if you are using the device on heavy stuff such as gaming, and navigation, you won’t be able to deplete the battery on a single day!
Camera & Video Capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
The big number that I am excited about is the camera. By default, the main 108 MP does beaming that kicks out a 12 MP camera, and it is the sharpest, most detail 12 MP camera that you will love. It also has the classic Samsung color accuracy, bringing out shadows and softening objects. The whole deal that makes Samsung phones a little better.
There is also the ultra-wide camera, which is the softest of the 3 cameras. It will give you a fun perspective when we are taking photos in good lighting. It even has the Samsung much improved night mode.
Then there is the full 108 MP that can be toggled on, and it provides more detail to the photos you are taking. Even though you will have to crop out some part of the images later.
The main 108MP camera is massive, the sensors are larger allowing in more light to take better photos. The sensors in the main camera are so big and they remove the dual aperture feature that was shipped in the previous Samsung devices.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra sensors are open at f/1.8 all the time. These camera features combine to give you a razor-thin camera focus. That way things that aren’t in the plane of focus by even small inches are cut out.
Taking photos with the ultra-wide camera will only focus on your subject and blur out the background of the photos in a fringe manner.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra can shoot 8K. That’s the additional features that the new Snapdragon 865 is getting. Here is a laundry list of trade-offs that the Galaxy S20 Ultra is making with the 8k video:
They lock 8k video at 24 frames per second, you can’t go above that even though 30 fps is the correct frame
It punches in a lot, limiting where you can frame with it
They turn focus tracking off with the 8k video.
Because of how much data is being processed, it takes a long time to process the video from the top to the bottom while on the Snapdragon 865 chipset. This creates a rolling shutter, making your video turn into jelly.
The file sizes are huge, 8k videos will take about 10MP per second, which might take forever to upload.
100X space zoom has been printed in the back of the phone and it comes from the typical 48 MP periscope camera seating on the phone’s side. Just because you have 100 X zoo, doesn’t mean that you should use 100X zoom all the time.
The S20 Ultra 48MP periscope camera has made it easy for you to punch at whatever zoom level and take the sharpest photos.
I have to note that the camera is better and worse depending on the setting and the environment that you are taking photos in. Though photos from the Google Pixel and the iPhone produce better quality pictures compared to the Samsung.
Extra features of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
- Ultrasonic fingerprint reader
- Wireless & reverse wireless charging
- IP68 & Samsung Pay
- 5G & Wi-Fi 6 for faster wireless connectivity

Is the S20 Ultra a good Phone?
If you are wondering if the S20 Ultra is a good phone, then have a look at what Amazon customers had to say after purchasing the phone. Some people were content with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, while others hated it right out of the box. Here is what some verified purchases on Amazon had to say.
Chromatek was not pleased with the camera experience.
Samsung has dropped the ball with the 20 Ultra. Especially with the camera. The focus is constantly hunting, and when it is finally sharp, it often pops out of focus again as you take the photo. The fingerprint reader is slow and the Bluetooth wouldn’t connect for ages.
Marc experienced the glass breaking on its own
Had the phone for less than 2 months. Camera glass breaks with no mishandling. Samsung won’t claim it’s a manufacturer defect. Got an estimate of 110 to replace. Wish I never bought the phone. Don’t buy.
anikd123 thinks this is a good phone but not the best Samsung could produce.
Face recognition is pathetic. You can’t unlock it just by looking at an angle. Raise your hand to bring the phone up to your eye level. The fingerprint reader: It is more horrible than the Face recognition. I can never login through fingerprints despite registering it properly.
How Much is the Samsung S20 Ultra in Kenya?
The Samsung Galaxy costs Ksh. 120,000. The S20 ultra-phone, glossy black and glossy gray, is a little underwhelming. Though you can always customize the look of your phone with nicer phone skin.
- The phone comes with:
- 25W charging plug
- a SIM ejector tool
- a USB-C to USB-C cable
- a pair of AKG USB-C earbuds
If you don’t want to buy the Galaxy S20 Ultra here are other alternatives great for S20 Ultra.
One Plus 8 Pro
Both the One Plus 8 Pro and the Galaxy S20 Ultra use the same processor, the Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865. The display is 6.78inches fluid AMOLED screen. The Phone has a 4510 mAh battery capacity and a 48MP main camera.
The good thing is the One Plus 8 Pro is Ksh. 107,000, cheaper than the Galaxy S20 Ultra. You get a fast phone with prominent features.
Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro was bold enough to be the first smartphone with a 108MP camera that takes stunning photos. Months later, the Galaxy S20 Ultra was released with the same camera specs.
You get amazing features with the Mi 10 Pro, but it’s still important to note that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra gives you better quality than the Mi 10 Pro.
Samsung Galaxy S20
You could also step down and select the Galaxy S20. Both phones have similar specs. If you want to save cash, then the S20 will serve as a better alternative. Though you will miss out on the bigger screen display and a better camera.

Is the Galaxy S20 Ultra Worth It?
Samsung’s strategy of throwing all the numbers on the phone did work, they produced an excellent phone. With the most incredible display, the specs numbers are impressive. I would recommend the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra because it is no doubt an amazing phone.
